CELEBRATING OUR 65TH ANNIVERSARY (Wednesday 15 April in the Georgian House Orangery)
Alderney’s Chamber of Commerce has celebrated its 65th anniversary since its second inception in April 1961 after being disbanded in June 1940 prior to the evacuation of islanders during WW2.
That meeting was held on 17th April 1961 in the Catholic Hall.
Under the leadership of Mr George Baron (later to be Jurat of the Alderney Court and President of the States), it started to flourish and now stands at more than 160 members while enjoying a fine positive relationship with our States.
President Andrew Eggleston (in his 20th year as president) thanked two of Mr Baron’s children, David and Jill Hooper for joining in the celebration at The Georgian in the presence of about 50 Chamber members and invited guests.
Andrew spoke briefly about some of the major topics that Chamber’s Council were working on. These included completing a report to Economic Development Committee following its recent economic survey which highlighted three priorities – robust connectivity, housing and that the Land Use Plan must be an economic enabler not a disabler.
In the current economic climate, there was widespread concern that the States were contemplating spending more than £400,000 on a review of the Land Use Plan.
