Dear Member
I think we are all aware that the latter part of last year produced some highs and lows within the political spectre. The elections in November produced a new and fresh look within the States while some turmoil ensued towards the end of the year with two resignations and a dismissal. An unwelcome time that did not serve us well from a Guernsey States viewpoint.
We feel we may have started to turn a corner with now 50% of our States comprising new members and a positive conclusion within the Guernsey States last Friday when our three amendments were all passed with sound majorities. We have now made headway in the lead-up to the rebuilding of our runway.
• Please keep free the early evening of Wednesday 28th May for our AGM at the Georgian. As you are aware, our Constitution states there are to be 6 Council members and a treasurer. Three stand down by rotation every two years – this year it is Nicky Burland, Vanessa Main and Ian Corder all of whom can of course stand again for a further two years.
• This coming Wednesday, 23rd, we have organised an AI Workshop presented by Cam Cairnduff. 21 members have so far booked in for this event. There are more spaces available. It is from 3.00 to 5.00 at The Georgian. If you would like to join us, please email info@alderneychamber.com or tell any Council member.
• Regarding energy, we are presently learning more about the wind farm possibility along with the system devised by Spiralis.
• We are considering forming a small housing group to feed into the States. It will discuss all aspects of this subject with emphasis on making it more viable for younger people to buy – such as a change in law to enable banks to lend against leasehold properties (eg flats). Council continues to work on this aspect.
• Other topics we are currently discussing include air and sea transport, post, roads, feedback from our hospitality group meetings, duty free, closer contact with Jersey and Guernsey Chambers, the States business directory update, and general feedback from our meetings with States Members new and old.
We will continue such Chamber notes on a monthly basis. Meanwhile, do come through on any thoughts or topics you would like to bring to the attention of the Council.
